Note from a genealogist:
Here are 2 sites that I have used for my NY State genealogy, both with great success.
They are very easy to use and free - donations are appreciated.
The first is The Italian Genealogy Group found at www.italiangen.org. This organization has put together some great data bases for the New York City researcher. They have naturalizations and vital records for the 5 boroughs from about 1860 thru 1937. For the vital records that you find you will be given the certificate number for that event. Take that and go to the New York City archives (New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene,
www.nyc.gov/health for births after 1909 and deaths after 1948) or (the New York City
Municipal Archives, www.nyc.gov/records for births before 1910 and deaths before 1949). You can request the records on line using the certificate number from your previous search or on a by name/s basis for certain year spans. Quick and easy - really works well, as I mentioned a couple of weeks if you supply the certificate number of the document you want.
The other site that I have found useful is the Mattituck-Laurel Library, www.suffolk.lib.ny.us/libraries/matt then click Local History. This is for finding folks living in Eastern Long Island. I have used the obituary index a number of times. Search the index, note the date and page then e-mail the Library. They will scan the obit and send via e-mail at no cost. They will accept donations to the library's general fund. You will usually get them back within a couple of days.

About the New York GenWeb Project
A message was sent out over the GEN-NYS-L list in June 1996 asking if
anyone would be interested in starting a New York State GenWeb page similiar to a highly
successful project underway in Kentucky. Many people expressed an interest in this idea.
About the same time, Jeff Murphy, coordinator of the KY GenWeb, decided to go national
with the idea, and out of that grew the US GenWeb project, and the NY GenWeb project. At
the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of
databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. Contact the volunteer shown
on the county page if you have a desire to add your data to the database. If the county in
which you are interested does not have a page and you wish to participate, please
contact NYS GenWeb Coordinator.

New York GenWeb Coordinator
To give the new NYS coordinator a better
understanding of my page I'm asking anyone who frequents it to email him with their
comments - good, bad or indifferent. If you don't mind, you could also CC me at
hopefarm@hopefarm.com -- BUT -- that is not required. If you use the genealogy section, or
have an opinion about a commercial site hosting a NYGenWeb page - your participation is
encouraged.
This program works because we all contribute.
