SCHOFIELD family members that moved from Stamford, CT or Bedford and Pound Ridge, NY to
northeastern Greene County or southern Albany County in the late 1700s early 1800s: In a
book by Wicks, Edith M. and Olson, Virginia H. entitled: Stamford's soldiers :
Genealogical Biographies of Revolutionary War Patriots from Stamford, Connecticut edited
by Paul W. Prindle. [Stamford Genealogical Society, Stamford, CT:1976] Gideon SCOFIELD,
Jr. "He was a private in Capt. Reuben Scofield's Company from 28 July 1780 to 1
January 1781 and served as a private in Col. Canfield's Regiment in 1782. Gideon Scofield
was born 17 January 1765 son of Gideon and Lydia (Hoyt) Scofield. He married on 10 April
1788, at Pound Ridge, New York, Abigail Kennedy. She was born 13 June 1772, daughter of
Phillip and Abigail (Weed) Kennedy. Gideon died 7 May 1807 at Westerlo, New York, and
Abigail married, second, on 26 September 1813, Simeon Garrett of New Baltimore, New York,
who died 18 April 1847. She was refused a pension for Gideon's service. She died in
1854." According to unproved family records Thomas Seaman [b. July 12, 1764 d. Bef
1855] mar. Lydia SCHOFIELD [b. April 17, 1773 d. May 03, 1852]. She is reportedly the
daughter of Gideon SCHOFIELD [b. Abt 1740-d. 1807] and Elizabeth Can___ [1721-1806]. The
Greenville Presbyterian Church records in Greene County have the marriage of a Thomas
SYMMONS of Coyemans, and Lydia SCOVIL of Bedford on December 24, 1794. According to the
gravestones Lydia (Schofield) Seaman's first child, Sarah was born in 1796 and died May
19, 1826. Thomas Seaman and Lydia (Scofield/Schofield) Seaman had a farm outside the
village of South Westerlo, in the Township of Westerlo in the County of Albany, NY, which
is about 23 miles due south by southwest of the city of Albany. Part of their farm seems
to have also to have been in Greene County which was incorporated in 1800. They along with
six children that died of a typhus epidemic in 1826 are all buried in the Stanton Cemetery
one mile south by southeast of the town of Dormansville in the Township of Westerlo,
Albany County, NY. Thomas Seaman and family appear on the 1820 and 1830 federal census in
Westerlo, Albany Co. Jim Rubins web site:
http://www.napanet.net/~jmrubins/index.htm
- . SEAMAN/SYMMONS/SIMMONS [2/8/97] In a typed but unproved family history I find the
statement: "Absolum Seaman born about 1740, died at the age of 101 years, came to the
town of Westerlo from Nassau Co., New York State. He was the father of Thomas Seaman
[7/12/1764-11/23/1852]." The author of the family history, Everett Folsmsbee, worked
mostly from data gathered from cemetery records and gravestones in Greene County. He died
in 1970 and I do not have access to his notes but I have been able to confirm most of what
was written. A critical piece that I cannot so far confirm is the above statement about
the father of Thomas Seaman and where he came from. In the records of the Greenville
Presbyterian Church [Greene Co., NY] on December 24, 1794 Thomas SYMMONS of Coyemans
[Albany Co. NY], and Lydia SCOVIL of Bedford [NY] are married. The first time I can find
Thomas Seaman is in the federal census of 1820 at Westerlo, in the southern part of Albany
County, NY. He is a "farmer". In the federal census of 1830 he continues to
reside in Westerlo but the census taker spelled his name: "Simmons". In 1837
there is a deed for property recorded under "Thomas Seaman, and wife Lydia"
where Thomas is a grantor of a deed of 37 acres in Westerlo, Albany Co., to Edwin Scofield
and Ezra H. Scofield. James Rubins

- . Shaw/Westfall (8/1/99) --
Looking for relatives, ancestors and descendants of Anna Almina Shaw, 1863-1946, my great grandmother. Anna married Franklin William Howard, 1853-1911, in Wisconsin in 1877. Anna and Franklin would return to New York around 1900, and live in the East Jewitt area of Greene Co. Franklin is buried in North Settlement next to his parents. Anna is buried next to her daughter, Iva Howard Humphrey, 1895-1967, & her husband Ellsworth Humphrey, dates unknown, in East Jewitt. Anna would remarry after Franklin's death in 1911. Her second husband was George R. McCoon, 1861-1922. We believe Anna died in 1946, having lived with her daughter in East Jewitt after her husbands death. Anna's parents were James Shaw, about.1810, and Margaret Westfall, about.1827, and both may have been born in Greene counties. James had one brother that we know of, Daniel, 1802, that we know of. - . VANORDER/VAN ORDER/VAN ORDEN 3/4/99 For several years I have been researching
the VAN ORDER surname and I'm now at a dead-end. The first VO's I find in the Finger Lakes
area, where I was born, were four households in the 1810 census. There were a Henry,
James, David and Peter in Seneca County. Information is that they came from the New
York/Bergin County, NJ area where the name was VAN ORDEN. The 1800 census lists several
VAN ORDERs in Greene County, NY: Name Page Elizabeth, Mrs. 327B:2 John 327B:2 John Jr.
327B:2 Major 327B:2 Mary 328A:2 This is the first listing of the VAN ORDER surname I can
find in New York State. It seem that it was used interchangeably with VAN ORDEN. I have
been unable to find any VAN ORDERs in New York State in the first census in 1790. Any help
you could give me about the VAN ORDERs/VAN ORDENs in Greene County would be very much
appreciated. John A. Van Order Cornelius, NC.
